Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless, a provider of wireless voice and 3G data services, has reportedly announced that its customers will now be able to access some very helpful and cool applications in the Android Market, through their DROID by Motorola (News - Alert) smartphones.

Customers who own the Verizon Wireless Motorola DROID will be able to access thousands of applications within the Verizon Channel in the Android (News - Alert) Market, which help them stay in touch, up to date and entertained, all while running on the Verizon network throughout the United States.

Additionally, customers will be able to get cool and popular apps each week in the Verizon Channel as well, the company said. This week, the applications being offered at the market include Weatherbug, a mobile app that allows customers to access live, local weather information and images for thousands of locations, customized maps, daily videos and severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service, without paying a single penny. Platinum Sudoku, another application to be accessed by Verizon customers this week, offers 640,000 unique Sudoku grids that can be solved anywhere they carry their DROID. The application features five difficulty levels, and is available at $2.99.

Slacker Radio, the free personalized radio application is a nice way to discover new artists and hear favorite songs. It features more than 100 expert-programmed radio stations from every genre for the customers to choose from, and they can alternatively create their own custom stations as well.

For helping the health conscious customers, the Verizon Channel in the Android Market features an application named Fast Food Calorie Counter Pro this week, which helps them keep their diets on track when on the run. The app is available at just $1.99, and mentions 72 restaurants with 8,858 menu items, with detailed nutritional information of each item, such as calories, fats, carbohydrates, fiber and protein.

The dxTop app offered by Access Lane, pronounced as dex-top, helps the customers in making their Android phones more usable and feature-rich. It features four different screens for applications, widgets, etc. and offers full theme support, including custom icons and fonts, ringtones, lock screen and dxTop specific themed widgets. Costing $2.99, the app supports two types of quick access to the phone’s core functions.

In November 2009, Verizon’s 2,000-plus stores reportedly began offering the new Motorola DROID, powered by Google’s (News - Alert) Android 2.0 operating system to the customers. To celebrate the launch, Verizon Wireless had created an interactive experience in New York City on Friday called “DROID Does Times Square,” which let the callers control two of Times Square’s largest digital billboards, which were the NASDAQ and Reuters (News - Alert) signs, using only voice commands.
