Nexus One and iPhone Snuggle up on AT&T's Network, But Will Users Get Cozy with Google?
Now that Nexus One is sharing space with iPhone, on AT&T’s network, will AT&T subscribers get more excited about the debut mobile phone from Google (News - Alert)?
It’s a burning question bugging media pundits and analysts alike, all of whom have yet to see Nexus One even come close to presenting itself as a legit challenger to Apple’s baby.
But Google -- with its Android-fueled, three-month-old gadget and ambitious plans for the smartphone market -- sure hopes so.
On Tuesday Google announced a Nexus One compatible with AT&T’s (News - Alert) 3G network, TMCnet reported.
This new model can be purchased as an unlocked device without a service plan. In addition to AT&T’s 3G network, this device will also run on Rogers Wireless (News - Alert) in Canada. And like the first version of the Nexus One, it can be used with most GSM operators globally.
“Currently the device is compatible with most 3G networks, including T-Mobile (News - Alert) in the [United States],” states Google in its Nexus One blog. “However, there are some carriers that have different 3G frequencies, such as AT&T in the U.S. and Rogers Wireless in Canada, so users with these SIM cards can only access 2G or EDGE networks on their Nexus One.”
So far Google has been mum about how many Nexus One phones have been sold to date, and, according to one news report, BroadPoint.Amtech (News - Alert) analyst Benjamin Schachter estimates Google will sell about 125,000 of the phones during the Nexus One’s first three months on the market. Of course, that means it has a lot of catching up to do: Apple has sold about 40 million iPhones since it was introduced in 2007.
