A report on the global High Speed Packet Access, or HSPA, market has been released by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. or GIA. By 2015, there will be nearly 2.07 billion global HSPA subscriptions. Rise in the demand for bandwidth-intensive triple play content, continued migration from 2.5G to 3G/3.5G, and evolution of next-generation HSPA technologies are some of the factors which are driving the growth in this market.

The first progressive step headed for providing triple-play services to mobile users is HSPA. The use of both HSDPA 3GPP Rel.5 as well as HSUPA 3GPP Rel.6 technologies on a single network is referred to as HSPA. An upgrade to the current UMTS networks, these technologies will deliver additional network capacity to the carrier. They will also deliver superior bandwidth to the consumer, and advanced interactivity for data applications. While the downlink performance is optimized by HSDPA, the E-DCH or Enhanced Dedicated Channel is used by HSUPA to improve and optimize uplink performance. The carrier's investment in the network prior to the next stage to 3GPP Long Term Evolution is expanded by HSPA+, a part of HSPA technology.

Due to increase in use of HSPA/HSDPA service, there are potential cost savings. The multimedia capabilities have also enhanced. However, due to the current limited capital-raising opportunities, some operators may find it difficult to maintain investment plans for full-fledged transition from HSPA to HSPA+ systems.

More than half of the global HSPA market estimated in 2009 is collectively accounted by Europe and North America. The report also states that emerging markets of Asia-Pacific, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East are showing robust growth in the short to medium period.

AT&T, Hutchison 3G, NTT DoCoMo (News - Alert) Inc, SK Telecom Co Ltd, Telefónica S.A, Vodafone Group Plc, 4G Systems GmbH & Co. KG, Alcatel-Lucent and AnyDATA Corporation are some of the key players in this market. Other key players include Broadcom (News - Alert) Corporation, BWA Technology GmbH, Cisco Systems Inc, Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. and IBM among others.

A review of noteworthy market trends, growth drivers and challenges is provided by GIA's report "High Speed Packet Access (HSPA): A Global Strategic Business Report" Further information on this report is available at http://www.strategyr.com/High_Speed_Packet_Access_HSPA_Market_Report.asp.
