New iconectiv White Paper Highlights Caller ID Spoofing

Have you ever received a phone call that seemed legitimate because a familiar Caller ID appeared when the phone rang? However, when you picked up the phone, it turned out to be a telemarketer or robocall? The experience is incredibly annoying, and you’re not alone in that frustration.
This practice of making misleading calls is referred to as spoofing, and it’s the primary source of Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) complaints and reports of telecom fraud. More specifically, spoofing is the illegal practice of manipulating Caller ID to mislead consumers into accepting unwanted calls from live telemarketers of automated pre-recorded messages (robocalls).
Despite the many complaints the FCC has received in regard to spoofing, the problem is increasing at an alarming rate. In fact, the FCC reported that fraudulent Caller ID hit a record 1.7 million calls in the first four months of 2016, up 41 percent from the previous year. While the occasional unexpected telemarketer is annoying but harmless in their attempts to avoid regulatory penalties, other disreputable parties are known to use spoofed Caller IDs to impersonate banks and other entities in order to defraud consumers.
This is a growing problem that affects most people, so what’s being done to stop it? A new industry white paper from iconectiv (News - Alert), titled Caller ID: The Impact of Robocalling and Spoofing, was released today to highlight the issue. iconectiv published the paper because it saw a need to educate people about the issue of spoofing, while also highlighting the various techniques being developed to help alleviate the problem.
More specifically, the paper looks at the efforts of academic researchers and leading telecom associations and companies to develop the SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) standard. This standard is a framework that provides end-to-end cryptographic authentication and verification of the telephone identity and related information.
iconectiv has taken this standard a step further by developing a solution that can, among other important functions, identify the point of origin to better determine if the Caller ID has been misrepresented or altered.
