Xbox May Add Blu-Ray Player, Other Changes to Next Console

Release dates on new devices usually assume the top spot as topic of discussion in most rumor spaces, but Xbox enthusiasts are currently preoccupied. No matter when the newest console launches, sources indicate it may include a number of changes. One of these is its own Blu-Ray player, sparking some halfhearted interest in Sony – the founder of Blu-Ray.

Gaming blog VG247 recently touched on potential advancements to Microsoft’s (News - Alert) prized video game system, citing both a Blu-Ray player and two graphics processing units (GPU) by possible Microsoft partner AMU.

Though not a bombshell, rumors should incite peculiar, perhaps amused reactions from Sony, creators of the Blu-Ray Disc Association, who licenses the technology to other users.

Blu-Ray might also accompany an “always-on Internet connection” to prevent piracy, according to CNet, and a built-in sensor for Kinect – its motion-detecting application – originally released as an accessory to compete with the Nintendo Wii’s gameplay philosophy.

More controversial predictions include a possible restriction on used-game playing, an attribute in opposition to opinions by GameStop.

“We think it's unlikely that there would be that next-gen console [that blocks used games] because the model simply hasn't been proven that works," said Paul Raines, CEO of GameStop, explaining that game retailers like themselves thrive on revenue generated from used material.

Writers at Kotaku, however, “remain confident” the software giant will release a system that in some way prohibits used games in an effort to maintain a clean, up-to-date and honest playing community.

Microsoft plans to address challenges the current Xbox 360 poses for future developments at the E3 Gaming Expo this June.
