Neurotechnology Unveils NPointer

Laptop users often complain about the problems of using a touchpad as it can be tricky, especially if users are accustomed to using a desktop mouse. Using an external mouse is not easy either, because either the mouse is too small for comfort, or there is simply not enough space to keep it.

Now, all that may change with Neurotechnology’s free web application. Named NPointer, the new tool is for computer control and navigation that utilizes hand gestures instead of a mouse or touch pad. The new program is free to download, and there is no need to install any special hardware. It is just a standard webcam that comes with the NPointer software.

By allowing the user to scroll, click, double-click, drag and navigate around the computer screen with hand movements, NPointer allows the user to control standard Windows programs. NPointer uses computer vision technology that turns the webcam into a controller when it is pointed at the hand.

While the visual interface shows semi-transparent “buttons” and controls, gestural controls map to the natural placement of the hand and fingers palm-down on a desk or hovering just above it.

“Today’s release of NPointer is the first step toward gesture recognition that does not require special hardware,” said Vaidas Didvalis, NPointer project leader in a company statement. “We expect this technology will find many new fields of application and, based on user feedback, we will continue to improve it.”

Recently, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, recognized the company’s VeriEye iris recognition algorithm as a fast and accurate algorithm among more than 86 algorithms.
