ON (News - Alert) Semiconductor has recently revealed a completely programmable Lithium-Ion or Li-Ion switching battery charger – the NCP1851 – made especially for enhancing power effectiveness in smartphones, tablets and other handheld devices. The NCP1851, which comprises of sophisticated startup capabilities, decreases the charge time considerably and enhances battery life.

The device additionally features a charging capability of 1.6 ampere (A), thereby making it ideal for the newest USB compliant input supplies and big battery capacities. The device furthermore ensures that in 90 minutes, a charge cycle of a 1650 milli ampere hour or mAh, 4.2 volt or V Li-Ion battery is finished.

In a statement, Thibault Kassir, director for Interface & Power ICs Division at ON Semiconductor, said, “Robustness, efficiency and fast charge time are now prerequisites for designers of today’s high performance, ultra-space constrained applications. The NCP1851 single chip solution allows simple integration into the latest USB charging designs. We are already receiving wins from our major customers for the device due to its charge time performance and advanced feature set.”

Dynamic power path management has been incorporated by the NCP1851, thereby facilitating instantaneous system turn-on in the event of a feeble battery. The NCP1851 also assists in refilling a completely discharged battery. Protected charging of the system is guaranteed with the device’s internal junction temperature sensor and external Negative Temperature Coefficient or NTC thermistor. These sensors and thermistors report committed interrupts to the i²C Control Bus.

A USB On-the-Go or OTG mode is also offered by the NCP1851, which assists in improving battery voltage to power accessories that are connected into the USB port, thereby avoiding the requirement for an additional step-up converter.

A 25 bump Flip-Chip CSP (News - Alert) package case is used to encase the NCP1851. The device, which measure only 2.2 mm x 2.55 mm x 0.6 mm, has been priced at $1.25 per unit.

ON Semiconductor provides high performance, energy competent, silicon offerings for green electronics. Customers are able to resolve their design issues related to automotive, communications, computing, consumer, industrial, LED lighting, medical, military/aerospace and power applications in a competent manner with ON Semiconductor’s wide-ranging portfolio of power and signal management, logic, discrete and customizable devices.
