MetroPCS Communications, a provider of next-generation communication services, has just launched its Rich Communication Services (RCS) offering on a 4G LTE (News - Alert) network.
The RCS services will be offered under the GSMA-licensed joyn brand. The service allows an intuitive way to use enriched services like integrated instant messaging or chat, Wi-Fi, video calling and simplified content sharing.
Based on the GSMA (News - Alert) RCS 5.0 standard, joyn by MetroPCS offers a simple and personal way to connect with friends and family in real-time by showing how contacts can be reached and which multimedia capabilities in chat, content transfer or video share are available for each contact.
Some of the RCS services supported by 4GLTE joyn-enabled smartphones include contacts presence, enriched chat, content sharing, Wi-Fi and video calling.
Contacts presence shows contact availability and status sync (online, busy, away, unavailable), and includes features such as calendar sync and social network interaction. The enriched chat includes features such as instant messaging and group chat, conversational view and delivery of read notifications and composing indications.
The Content Sharing feature brings calls and chats to life by sharing content with just one click from the address book. It allows sharing video, images and files while on a call and within instant messaging or chat. It also includes a geo-location function. In addition, the Wi-Fi and video calling functionality allows users to stay connected with voice and video calls in areas with little or no cellular coverage using Wi-Fi.
“MetroPCS' goal has been to innovate for the purpose of delivering an exceptional quality of experience to our customers and to consumers who demand value and the ability to do more with their mobile service,” said Roger Linquist, CEO and chairman of MetroPCS, in a statement.
“As the first 4G LTE carrier in the world to offer RCS, we are excited to join the global community of operators implementing the RCS standard and we are proud of our team and partners who were critical in building this capability that will evolve and expand over the next year,” Linquist added.
joyn by MetroPCS will be available beginning today on the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G. The app is available for download both at @metro App Store and Google (News - Alert) Play. MetroPCS plans to roll out additional RCS-enabled 4G LTE smartphones and services later this year and throughout 2013, with native support for joyn services coming at a later date.
