Akustica Introduces New HD Voice Microphones for Consumer Electronic Devices

Akustica, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bosch Group specializing in micro-electromechanical system microphones, unveiled a set of four analog and digital top- and bottom-port high definition (HD) voice microphones that suit smartphones, tablets and other electronics devices.

“There is a groundswell of support behind HD voice from wireless carriers, mobile chipset suppliers and mobile-device manufacturers,” said Davin Yuknis, vice president, sales and marketing, Akustica. “That’s because the HD voice experience mirrors the emotional nuance of a conversation to the point where you feel as if you are talking face-to-face and not over a phone.”

“And sound quality is determined at the microphone, the first component in the audio chain. If the noise is too high or the microphone cuts off important voice-band frequencies right at the start, that performance cannot be recovered downstream,” added Yuknis.

The new Akustica HD voice MEMS microphones feature high 63dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), super wideband frequency response, and +/-2dB sensitivity, suitable for mobile devices.

Also, Akustica’s new microphones will serve consumer needs for natural-sounding conversation and improved speech recognition accuracy enabled by HD voice-quality components. The most suitable of the new Akustica microphones can be picked according to the mechanical and electrical configuration incorporated in the design of a device.

The MEMS microphone market is expected to grow to more than four billion units by 2016.  The reason behind this growth is that the number of microphones used in each smartphone has increased from one to two, or even three in some cases. This may continue to increase as most mobile device manufacturers strive to enhance sound input quality in their new products, said Jérémie Bouchaud, director and principal analyst for MEMS and Sensors at IHS (News - Alert).

Earlier this year, Akustica expanded its product portfolio with the launch of a new analog micro-electromechanical system, or MEMS, microphone. The AKU340 device is designed for mobile handsets. The high-performance analog microphone uses technology developed by The Bosch Group, which owns South Side-based Akustica.
