Tobii Technology to Release World's First Eye Tracking PC Accessory Later This Year

Tobii Technology, a global leader in eye tracking and gaze interaction solutions, has decided to bring its technology to the average PC user in the form of a consumer eye-tracking PC peripheral. This device, which will be the first of its kind, is apparently about the size of a pen and can attach below the monitor of any Windows 8 PC.

This device is expected to launch its PC eye tracker, called the REX, in the fall of 2013.

Eye tracking technology itself has only begun emerging as viable over the last couple of years and has so far been used primarily in academic scenarios, such as finding out which parts of a Facebook (News - Alert) profile people actually look at. Tobii wants to bring this tech to consumers, though, with REX.

REX will make its official public debut next week at CES (News - Alert), allowing the world to see exactly how it works. For now, all that is known is that REX is a strip that can be attached below the display of any Windows 8 desktop or laptop. The device also requires a USB connection to work, along with special software called Tobii Gaze, that tracks what you're looking at on the screen. This enables users to perform tasks such as scrolling sideways or playing basic video games with only a glance.

Final retail pricing for the REX is currently unknown, but it is available now to developers for just under a thousand dollars. Factor in the fact that Tobii only plans to make 5,000 REX peripherals available to consumers, and you can get an idea of the price for the average joe.

In September 2012, Tobii and NTT DOCOMO partnered to create a concept tablet with embedded eye tracking. This tablet features what Tobii calls "the most advanced and compact eye tracker in the world," the Tobii IS20, which provides an unsurpassed eye-tracking experience.
