Would You Use the World's First Wireless Bicycle?

Cambridge Consultants would make Lance Armstrong blush (and much more tech-savvy). In today’s technologically infused era, the customer experience seems to be narrowly defined by all that is conveniently Internet-connected. This concept – coined the ‘Internet of Things’ or IoT – is expected to explode in the coming years, which experts believe is now entering its golden era.

In fact, it was recently reported by global market research and consulting company, MarketsandMarkets, that the global IoT market is forecast to increase at an estimate CAGR of 30.1 percent by 2017. In light of this, the folks over at CC have capitalized on this rapid growth by offering customers the world’s first ever wireless automatic gear-changing bicycle, or what it deems “the bicycle of the future.”

Could those long days spent pounding out miles on your traditional bike be soon long gone? As product evolution continues to reach new heights, it could very well be that traditional bikes become a symbol of old civilization, soon to be thrown into the steadily rising pile of other archaic technology. In a blog post last month, the company explained how it strives to make “the future of smart technology a reality with its ability to make everyday products digitally intelligent.”

In creating this new innovation, the wireless experts at Cambridge Consultants started out with a standard bicycle with an electronic gear-changing system. The company then wirelessly linked the gears to both the manual controls as well as a smartphone application mounted on the handlebars. The bike boasts high-tech information from sensors, which measure the user’s rate of pedaling and wheel speed. It’s this combination which allows the system to make automatic gear changes under the control of a smart algorithm via the smartphone, the company effortlessly sums up in the blog.

It’s a pretty impressive accomplishment, yet in reality, simply represents just what can be achieved by transforming a basic, traditional product.

The company also notes in the blog that this “bike of the future,” which the company will be showcasing at the upcoming 2013 International CES (News - Alert) Show, can be used for more consumer purposes – say, for those with bad joints who need to apply pressure precisely. The product is also apparently safer, as it automatically shifts down the gears when the rider brakes too fast, CC adds.

“At Cambridge Consultants, we see a future where every product is smart,” Ensor notes. “This bicycle demonstration shows how a combination of sensing, control, algorithms and connectivity can make a real difference to just one sector of the sports and fitness market. We see countless applications in different industries, and we are actively working on a number of projects that take a device and infuse our technology and design expertise to optimize the user experience.”

Interested in seeing a demonstration of the world’s first ever wireless bicycle? Stop by Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Cambridge Consultants’ booth 26334 at 11 a.m. to see for yourself! It definitely looks like something worth checking out.
