Coby Bursts into Market with New Android Tablet

Coby Electronics Corporation, otherwise known as Coby, has emerged onto the consumer tablet marketplace with the debut of its Android (News - Alert) tablet. Headquartered in Lake Success, New York, Coby announced the arrival of its latest Android 4.0 device: a 7-inch touchscreen tablet that comes with Google (News - Alert) Play and Google Mobile Services for $149.99.

According to reports, Coby’s device will be called the MID7065 and allow owners to “immediately access and enjoy hundreds of thousands of today’s hottest apps and games.” As more tablet manufacturers and resellers enter the marketplace, consumers should expect these devices to drop in price and plateau based on a range of sizes, speeds and features.

2013 is sure to be the Year of the Tablet, and Coby is hoping to squeeze its way into the field alongside seemingly endless competitors. As one report notes, “The tablet industry has more competition this year than in prior years. New manufacturers like Samsung (News - Alert), Google and Coby have all entered the marketplace to help find a position with consumers. The launch and sale of the Apple iPad has helped to introduce the world to the possibilities of these devices and Amazon was one of the first to take notice of the potential available.”

With 2,000 employees, Coby maintains revenue of around $200 million. While smaller than other competitors in this arena, Coby still manages a significant portion of the marketplace for a company of its size.

Indeed, Coby also serves as an OEM manufacturer for Hyundai, Samsung, Daewoo, and RadioShack's Presidian brand.

As the company seeks growth, the development of its newest Android tablet seeks to position Coby to “chip away a portion of Apple’s (News - Alert) sales.”

The next two years should reveal what will happen with the tablet market in the U.S. and elsewhere, but until then, the firm wants to run with the big dogs. While Apple will continue to dominate the market, competitors like Coby will continue to develop rival devices that allow it a stronger foothold in the commercial marketplace.
