PopVox and Other Civic Start-ups Make Government More User Friendly

Frustration with communication between the government and the public is something that many people can relate to. However, while most people just complain and move on, former congressional aide Marci Harris decided to do something about it.

While working for the office of Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., Harris got frustrated with how easily information and messages got lost and, in 2010, she left to found PopVox, a tech start-up that aims to improve communication between Congress and its constituents.

"The way information is processed is breaking. There has to be a new way," said Harris, recalling her frustration in an interview with PBS Newshour. was launched in 2011 by Harris, partnered with lobbyist Rachna Choudhly and programmer Joshua Tauberer. The site allows users to search for bills as well as either support or oppose them.
