Until recently, there was a $34 million contract available in Saint Mary's Country Maryland to improve first responder’s communication systems. The county was searching for a provider to introduce a safety radio network at the highest standard for voice and data transitions. Harris Country won the contract to design and deploy a Project 25 (P25) Phase2 standards-based radio system and provide greater coverage including in-building coverage, a feature currently lacking in many of the first responder communication networks around the country. Saint Mary County sprawls for 764 square miles, so the task is not a small one.
P25 is a suite of technical standards for the design and manufacture of digital radio communications and relates specifically to interoperability between agencies. The Harris Corporation (News - Alert) roll-out plan is designed to allow a gradual change over from the current Harris Enhanced Digital Access Communication System (EDACS) to the new Harris P25 Phase 2 system with minimal disruption to daily operations of first responders throughout the county.
“The first responders in Saint Mary’s County are committed to protecting the safety of our residents, and to do that, they require reliable and interoperable communication solutions that perform when needed most,” said Bob Kelly, director of Emergency Services and Technology, Saint Mary’s County. “After a comprehensive evaluation process, we chose the Harris system because it offered us the best coverage for our first responders’ needs and is based on the latest generation of communication standards.”
Harris Corporation is an international communications and information technology company servicing government and commercial markets worldwide. Based in Florida, the company reports roughly $5.5 billion in annual revenue. This contract represents a big win for Harris, and may even result in new job creation.
