By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

The U.S. Navy recently announced that it has awarded a contract worth $2.4 million to Rome Research Corporation, a subsidiary of PAR Technology Corporation. As part of the contract, RRC will provide telecommunications operations at the Global Information (News - Alert) Grid or GIG facility, located in Souda Bay on the island of Crete, Greece. RRC, which operates several communications facilities for the U.S. Navy in the country and globally, will also, be responsible for the maintenance services at the GIG facility.

In a statement, Steve Lynch, president, Government Operations, PAR said, "We are pleased that the Navy has selected Rome Research Corporation to support its communications mission at Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic Detachment Souda Bay. The company's expertise and knowledge in operating telecommunications systems, as well as its cost effective approach, were key factors in the award decision. We look forward to supporting the Navy's communications mission at Souda Bay."

Military chiefs, policy architects and support staff utilize the GIG, a worldwide network for information capabilities, processes and human resources, for gathering, processing, storing, distributing and administrating information as and when required. Department of Defense or DoD, national security and associated intelligence community assignments and functions during war and peace are supported by the GIG.
