U.S. DoD Selects Falcon III Tactical Radio from Harris Corporation

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Harris Corporation (News - Alert) is a provider of innovative, highly reliable communications and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) solutions and services for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). The company also provides these services for international defense markets. In 2011, the company was ranked 13th on the Washington Technology list of top 100 U.S. government contractors.

Recently, the company stated that it was selected by U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to provide tactical radio accessory kits for the Falcon III AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack radio.

The Harris AN/PRC-117G offers soldiers with improved situational awareness of the battlefield with the help of wireless, high-bandwidth communications. According to the company, this facilitates applications such as streaming video, simultaneous voice and data feeds, collaborative chat, and also combat net radio abilities and connectivity to secure networks.

With the help of a man-portable radio that is considerably smaller, lighter and more capable than legacy units, the AN/PRC-117G's wideband networking features provide soldiers on the move and field commanders important real-time information. The AN/PRC-117G provides continuous coverage in the 30 MHz to 2 GHz frequency band with more than 10 times the processing power of currently fielded Type-1 manpack radios

“These kits will enable the U.S. forces to extend in-vehicle voice and data communications in the L-Band range,’’ said George Helm, president, Department of Defense Business, Harris RF Communications in a statement. "Harris is focused on addressing both current and emerging requirements for improved battlefield communications.”

Recently, the company partnered with ViaSat, Inc. to announce the delivery of the 100th two-channel, KOR-24 Small Tactical Terminal (STT). While Harris Corporation consists of experts in best-in-class assured communications products, systems and services, ViaSat (News - Alert) is a specialist of fixed and mobile satellite network services. STT, which considerably improves and expands situational awareness data for military users, has been created to optimize tactical data link equipment with respect to size, weight and power.
