General Dynamics Signs Contract under New U.S. Army Rapid-Acquisition Communications Program

By Meenakshi Shankar, TMCnet Contributor

General Dynamics (News - Alert), a company that specializes in business aviation; combat vehicles, weapons systems and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and mission-critical information systems and technology, signed a five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract under the U.S. Army's new Global Tactical Advanced Communications Systems (News - Alert) (GTACS) and Services program.

The program enables the rapid development and acquisition of a wide range of communications equipment and technical support needed by the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal agencies. The contract, as indicated, has a total potential value of $10 billion among all 20 awardees if all options are exercised.

"General Dynamics has been a long-term partner of U.S. federal agencies, delivering the full complement of mission-critical tactical communications systems, engineering, products and services," Jerry DeMuro, executive vice president of Information Systems and Technology for General Dynamics, said in a statement.

"We understand the military's requirements and the challenges military and government personnel face, and will continue supporting their mission with solutions that are innovative, versatile and affordable through the GTACS program," DeMuro added.

GTACS is administered by the Army's Program Executive Office, Command, Control and Communications-Tactical, Special Projects Office, Northeast Regional Response Center and Project Manager, Warfighter Information Network – Tactical. The contract includes tactical command, control and communications system hardware, software, engineering, logistics, development, testing and systems-related support. GTACS replaces the World-Wide Satellite Systems program, for which General Dynamics C4 Systems (News - Alert) was one of six prime contractors.

This contract was awarded to General Dynamics One Source, which comprises General Dynamics C4 Systems, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, General Dynamics Information Technology and General Dynamics SATCOM (News - Alert) Technologies.

In related news, General Dynamics C4 Systems received an order from the U.S. Army to deliver a new secure radio for Nett Warrior soldiers.
