WWT Teams Up with Atlantis for U.S. Army Desktop Virtualization Project

By Meenakshi Shankar, TMCnet Contributor

World Wide Technology (News - Alert), company supplying technology products, services and supply chain solutions to the commercial, government and telecom sectors, has been awarded the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) project for the U.S. Army Medical Command under the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application and Clinical Application Virtualization contract.

WWT will be working with Atlantis Computing to carry out this project. The company is integrating Atlantis ILIO storage optimization software into a unique VDI architecture that is being deployed in eight military hospitals across the United States and Europe.

"Atlantis ILIO was instrumental in winning the U.S. Army project because it enabled us to reduce the amount of storage required by 80 percent," Scott Miller (News - Alert), director of cloud, virtualization and Advanced Technology Center, WWT said in a statement.

"Based on the success at the U.S. Army, we have incorporated Atlantis ILIO into our standard VDI architecture to ensure we can deliver VDI below the cost of physical PCs while improving performance," Miller added.

WWT officials also clarified that Atlantis ILIO storage optimization software was selected by WWT based on its ability to enable the NetApp storage array to support five times more Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp users, ensure fast response times for medical applications during patient visits, and reduce the risk of storage performance bottlenecks affecting the entire virtual environment.

Atlantis ILIO software was also awarded the Certificate of Networthiness from the U.S. Army Medical Command. This accreditation ensures that Atlantis Computing products meet strict U.S. Army and Department of Defense standards for security, compatibility and sustainability. The certification applies to all National Guard, Army Reserve and DoD organizations that use the Army Enterprise Infrastructure Network.

"Based on our success with the U.S. Army and our Certificate of Networthiness, we will work closely with WWT to help other branches of the Department of Defense and other government agencies realize the benefits of desktop virtualization, while saving tax payer dollars," said Steve Flora, director of federal sales for Atlantis Computing commented.

Recently, WWT was named to the 2013 FORTUNE "100 Best Places to Work For" list. This is the second year in a row that WWT has received this honor.
