Advanced Defense Technologies (ADTI) has announced plans to further develop the Sense and Avoid (SAA) technology payload for its drones and UAVs, along with partners. The SAA will be highly beneficial in defense as well as in commercial applications.
ADTI specializes in the development of systems and technologies required in military defense and homeland security industries. The system design technology employed in ADTI was developed under SBIR Programs with Government Agencies including NASA, DARPA and others.
SAA technology is based on electro-optical devices, and leverages high-resolution cameras tested extensively in UAV applications.
R.S. Tahim, president and CEO at Advanced Defense Technologies commented, “Commercial use of drones is going to be the next big revolution in aviation. Utilizing Sense and Avoid (SAA) technology payloads on board all drones and UAVs will be a critical step in overcoming public safety concerns.”
The UAVs from ADTI employ SAA technology and have GPS receivers installed in them, making them well equipped for locating intrusions. The system can deliver critical information and precise locational details of any obstacle.
This capability will effectively empower personnel involved in defense and vital commercial missions, said officials.
Autonomous aircrafts are very crucial in strategic applications. Once their success rates have been proven in areas away from towns and cities, they’ll be integrated for commercial applications. This will facilitate the usage of drones for applications closer to populated areas, opined Tahim.
In present applications, drones are controlled from the ground. But soon, Sense and Avoid (SAA) systems can be used to detect obstacles on the ground like power lines, while being used to detect aircraft as well.
They will also be able to fly even if communication links with the ground get disrupted due to unavoidable circumstances.
In August 2012, Advanced Defense Technologies entered into a joint venture agreement with AeroSpy, an Austria-based leading technology supplier in the field of navigation, motion tracking and mobile robotics, to develop and commercialize the first fully certified Sense and Avoid System that allows the integration of mission-specific UAVs into civilian airspace.
