As a boost to the state’s judicial system, the State of Colorado has received a new judicial center. Delivered two months earlier than the anticipated project time, the $258-million Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center will house several offices of the state’s judiciary.

With previous court building at the Denver Newspaper Agency Building becoming too expensive to maintain, the Colorado Judicial Department decided to move to a new building, and accordingly engaged the Urban Land Institute in 2005 to develop a solution.

The Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center will be located at 14th and Broadway.

The new judicial complex has been developed by Trammell Crow Company, designed by Fentress Architects and built by Mortenson Construction.

The 695,767-square-foot Colorado Judicial Center includes a courthouse and a 12-story office tower, including a 327-car parking facility. Currently seven judicial and legal agencies are scattered over 10 Denver locations.

The new judicial complex will consolidate these offices in a single location. This is expected to add to the efficiency of the state’s judicial system.

The 12-story office tower will house judicial and legal agencies, while the courthouse will be home to two courtrooms for the Court of Appeals, a courtroom for the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Supreme Court Library, and an educational civics learning center that will feature interactive exhibits showcasing the role of the American justice system.

Located at the south side of Civic Center Park, the neoclassical Judicial Center is surrounded by other prestigious civic and cultural structures such as Colorado State Capitol, the Denver City and County Building, the Denver Art Museum, and the Denver Public Library Central Branch.

The new building has been designed and built to endure a 100-year plus lifespan, according to the builders. The center is committed to achieving energy efficiency and on its way to obtaining a LEED certification.

Last month, Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction announced that Sera Maloney, PE of Mortenson Renewable Energy Groups, was named the winner of the Be Inspired Awards in the Innovation in Land Development, Engineering and Management category.
