Clean Energy Support in Connecticut Spurs SolarCity to Open Hartford Office

SolarCity (News - Alert), a six-year-old solar panel installation company based in San Mateo, California, is aiming to “make hay while the sun shines,” even if that’s in the cooler climes of New England. The company announced on February 7 that it is expanding its operations to Hartford, Connecticut, where state legislation passed last year is offering rebates for commercial, residential, and institutional on-site energy generation, either to property owners or third-party providers.

Effective July 1, 2011 under the Public Act 11-80 An Act Concerning the Establishment of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Planning for Connecticut’s Energy Future, the Connecticut Clean Energy (News - Alert) Fund became part of the newly created Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA). As the nation’s first full-scale clean energy finance authority, CEFIA will leverage public and private funds to drive investment and scale up clean energy deployment in Connecticut.

“Why pay a premium for power generated by fossil fuels when you can pay less for cleaner energy?” said Ed Steins, SolarCity’s regional director, Northeastern United States. “Connecticut residents pay some of the highest electricity rates in the nation. We can give them the option to reduce those bills and do something positive for the environment at the same time.”

SolarCity gives customers the opportunity to purchase their systems and installation or to have the panels installed for free and pay only for the solar electricity they produce. The company expects to enable many Connecticut homeowners and businesses to save thousands of dollars on electricity costs by bringing back a popular model the state itself offered until its program became oversubscribed in 2009. SolarCity will also perform comprehensive energy efficiency evaluations to provide recommendations for further opportunities for cost savings and to improve indoor air quality and comfort.

SolarCity is a one-stop-shop for a range of clean energy services that would otherwise require multiple companies, and can tailor service options for each customer’s situation. SolarCity provides solar design, installation, financing, insurance and performance guarantees, energy efficiency evaluations and upgrades, energy monitoring services, and electric vehicle charging installation. SolarCity services will initially be available to Connecticut homeowners who are customers of Connecticut Power & Light (CL&P) and United Illuminating (UI), beginning later this month.

SolarCity signed a lease for an office in the Hartford area this week, and has begun hiring locally. Candidates interested in available employment opportunities in Connecticut can visit the company’s employment site.
