United Microelectronics Corporation, UMC, a company principally engaged in the manufacture of semiconductor products was selected by Dow Jones Sustainability Index as a global component for the fifth consecutive year.

UMC's listing underscores the company's exceptional performance in continued innovation, sustainable operations and CSR (News - Alert) which is on par with leading global companies and recognized by international investors.

Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes was launched jointly by Dow Jones Index, STOXX and Sustainable Asset Management in 1999. DJSI is the first index that traces social responsibility performance of leading-edge enterprises, and is also one of the most creditable evaluation tools for reviewing sustainability worldwide.

"UMC's selection as a DJSI global component for five consecutive years demonstrates our hard work in sustainable operations, environmental protection, and corporate social responsibility. In addition to excelling in our core foundry business, we also strive to lead global businesses to fulfill corporate responsibilities while realizing our own CSR vision to co-exist with society,” Shih-Wei Sun, chief executive officer at UMC, said, in a statement.

This year, UMC was listed for both the DJSI-World and DJSI-Asia Pacific indexes. DJSI-World 2012 evaluated about 2,500 global enterprises, with only 340 qualifying as global components. Only five semiconductor companies were selected worldwide, with four listed for DJSI-Asia Pacific. UMC also achieved the highest scores for Innovation Management, Environmental Policy/Management System, Product Stewardship, Corporate Citizenship and Philanthropy and Stakeholder Engagement.

UMC’s newly built facility at Fab 12A recently gained LEED Gold recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council and EEWH Gold certification from Taiwan. The company also recently received a CSR award from CommonWealth magazine. Going forward, UMC is intending to aggressively fulfill its responsibility as a corporate citizen, and cooperate with suppliers to help its customers produce green products and improve sustainable competitiveness together.

In other news, UMC announced a collaborative effort with STMicroelectronics (News - Alert) for 65nm CMOS image sensor technology using backside illumination.
