Savannah Ocean Exchange recently honored Southern Company with an Industry Excellence Award. Southern Company is at the forefront of implementing ground-breaking technology for decreasing greenhouse gas discharges from power plants

The second yearly Solutions Exchange was organized by Savannah Ocean Exchange in Savannah, Ga. The substantial offerings from businesses and enterprises, which are instrumental for paving way for the future, are honored by Savannah Ocean Exchange. These offerings should not only be responsible for garnering economic development and production, but also decrease waste and utilization of natural assets.

Southern Company was honored for its project that involved the capture of carbon dioxide from Plant Barry near Mobile, Ala. The project was carried out in association with Mitsubishi (News - Alert) Heavy Industries Ltd., the Electric Power Research Institute or EPRI and other organizations.

As part of the project, Southern Company delivers the collected carbon dioxide to the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership of the U.S. Department of Energy. This organization compresses the carbon dioxide into a flue gas, which is then transferred to the Citronelle Oil Field. The Citronelle Oil Field, which is operated by Denbury Resources, stores this gas securely in a subterranean saline geologic structure.

In a statement, Chris Hobson, SVP for Research and Environmental Affairs and Chief Environmental Officer at Southern Company said, “Energy innovation projects like this are critical to providing real, meaningful solutions for America’s energy future. The leadership in energy technology that has been recognized by this award advances the notion that a healthy environment and robust domestic energy policy can coexist.”

Approximately 80,000 tons of carbon dioxide from Plant Barry has been collected by Southern Company and its project associates since June 2011. Alabama Power, an ancillary of Southern Company, is utilizing the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. technology KM-CDR for operating Plant Barry.

Savannah Ocean Exchange, which was launched in 2010, assists global organizations across multiple verticals and boundaries to come together with an aim to promote and implement solutions for changing the ocean, finances and wellbeing in a positive manner.
