Coca-Cola has announced a partnership with DEKA Research & Development Corporation to bring water purification systems to communities in Africa and Latin America where access to potable water is limited. This partnership is another step towards Coke’s mission to replenish 100 percent of the water used in its beverages and production by 2020.
Muhtar Kent, chairman and CEO, The Coca-Cola Company, stated, "Water is becoming a scarce, valuable commodity. Today more than one billion people lack access to safe drinking water."

He added, "Water is the lifeblood of our business and our commitment is to ensure we're doing our part to replenish the water we use and give it back to communities around the world. By partnering with DEKA R&D to bring the Slingshot technology to water-stressed communities in remote places, we hope to be able to deliver and maintain a clean water solution for many remote communities, changing the daily lives of thousands of people."
The project involves the use of DEKA’s Slingshot water purification system, invented by DEKA’s founder, Dean Kamen, an inventor of innovative medical devices, i.e. a wearable infusion pump and the Segway Human Transporter.
Slingshot uses vapor compression distillation and powered by a Stirling engine, which uses a combustible fuel sources, even cow dung, which produces methane. The unit is the size of a compact refrigerated, requires no filters and costs $1,000 to $2,000 per unit.
Slingshot’s process claims that it can produce clean water from almost any source, stagnant water, river water, ocean water and even raw sewage. It produces 10 gallons of clean water an hour on 500 watts of electricity—enough daily drinking water for 300 people.
According to a statement from Dean Kamen, Founder of DEKA, "Having a longstanding relationship with The Coca-Cola Company, my team and I knew we could make a great partnership and leverage our innovative water-purification machine for greater good.”
