The Green Grid Releases Three New Efficiency Metrics

In the twenty-first century, the data center has become an increasingly critical part of most business operations. It has now become necessary for owners and operators of these mission critical facilities to assess and improve their performance with energy efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission metrics with increasing demand and rising energy prices.

Recently, Green Grid entered into an agreement on measurement guidelines and next steps for three new efficiency metrics. According to the company reports, the taskforce agreed on the use of the Green Energy Coefficient, Energy Reuse Factor and Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE) metrics.

The three new metrics were picked up after discussion, exercise and trial among the taskforce participants. Making sure that the data center owners and operators can continuously assess and improve the performance of their mission critical features with the help of energy efficiency metrics, the memo offers a framework for users to approach the metrics holistically.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for the data center community to understand and embrace these metrics, and how they can work together," said Joyce Dickerson, Board Member, The Green Grid (News - Alert). "When implemented correctly, they can save organizations a lot of time, money, and additional resources. Although there is more work to do, we think this will bring us one step closer to a universally adopted set of metrics, indices, and measurement protocols that will have a positive impact on the industry.”

Recently, the company released a Data Center Efficiency and IT Equipment Reliability report. Along with new practices that facilitate data center operators to decrease and get rid of the need for mechanical air conditioning, the report explains the latest research on the dependability of modern IT equipment. Without affecting overall equipment failure rates, the Green Grid shows how data centers can run at considerably higher temperatures and humidity levels.
