Windsor Utility Customers Get 'Royal Treatment'

In its latest grid update, Windsor, Ontario-based EnWin Utilities Ltd. (EnWin) has chosen Harris Utilities to provide its customers with the tools they need to measure, monitor, and manage their power usage patterns; as well as to receive real-time information and electronic billing on their accounts.

EnWin, which is responsible for the distribution of electricity to Windsor’s population of more than 200,000, has participated in Ontario’s leading-edge smart meter program since its inception. In fact, the Government of Ontario was an earlier adopter of smart meters, announcing its goal to install the digital equipment on the premises of 800,000 homes and small businesses —qualified as small "general service" customers under 50 kilowatts ( kW) of demand—by the end of 2007. The initiative surpassed its goals—completing the deployment throughout the province by the end of 2010.


Then, in August 2010, the City of Windsor became one of Ontario’s first municipal participants to connect its water and waste water facilities to Ontario’s next-generation smart grid services in a pilot project being managed by Canadian smart grid innovator, Sempa Power, now doing business as ENBALA Power Networks Ltd. in Toronto.

Now, EnWin will deploy Ottawa-base HarrisUtilities’ NorthStar software for its customer information/ billing system (CIS); MeterSense, for meter data management (MDM); and CustomerConnect, as a customer engagement solution (CES (News - Alert)).

"We're thrilled to be able to provide our customers with the tools they need to first understand and then better manage utility costs," said Michael Duben, vice president, Customer Relations, at EnWin. "Over the next 18 months we will implement technology that will empower our residential and commercial customers with the information they need to make smart decisions about consumption, conservation and cost control."

"Putting end users in command of their own resource use is the quickest and most comprehensive way for utilities to achieve demand management."

EnWin’s residential and commercial consumers now will have the data they need to track their own energy consumption, engage in crucial resource conservation programs and receive a new billing format. With better awareness, ratepayers will make smarter choices, save money on their utility bills and help EnWin meet its conservation goals.
