Just Click a Button on Sage's Clear Windows to 'See Through a Glass Darkly'

Faribault, Minnesota –based Sage, a manufacturer of dynamic glass for windows, skylights and curtain walls, is exhibiting at this year’s BAU: The Future of Building, a trade fair for architects, materials, and systems being held in Munich this week.

Sage Electrochromics, Inc., is a specialized window glass developer. The company develops electrical “smart glass” that can be switched from a clear to a dark tint at the click of a button—or programmed to respond to changing sunlight and heat conditions. SageGlass, which is powered by solar cells, is zoned for precise control of the daylight and heat gain throughout the building.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), SageGlass technology "has the potential to reduce building heating and air conditioning equipment size by up to 25 percent, resulting in construction cost savings. SageGlass also could potentially reduce overall cooling loads for commercial buildings up to 20 percent by lowering peak power demand; and may reduce lighting costs by up to 60 percent, while providing building occupants with more natural daylight and greater comfort."

Sage is entering the European market of sustainable building design, equipped with 10 years of customer experience in the United States, together with the expert position in habitats and construction of its parent company, Paris-based Saint-Gobain.

Rather than using conventional sun controls–such as motorized window shades, blinds and louvers that tend to block sunlight and views—SageGlass provides a solution that enhances occupant comfort and provides unobstructed views of the outdoors. The unique, patented technology also offers a superior performance in switching time and increases a building’s value.

“BAU will be a terrific opportunity to showcase SageGlass’s impact on daylight and sun heat for the first time to the German market,” said Kirk Ratzel, director of Marketing and Sales, Sage Saiant-Gobain–Europe. “SageGlass opens new design opportunities for architects and building owners to create more comfortable living spaces and productive working environments while getting rid of standard shading solutions and maximizing the energy efficiency of the building.”
