New Power Factor Corrector from AOS Keeps Costs Low and Useful Power High

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited (AOS), a developer and global supplier of power semiconductors and integrated circuits, has launched the first in its new line of power factor correction (PFC) devices.

Power factor correction is vital to overall grid efficiency. In an electric grid, a load with a “low power factor” draws more current than a load with a “high power factor”——for the same amount of useful power transferred. The higher the current, the more energy lost in the distribution system——and the bigger the equipment needed, including wires.

What’s more, to compensate for the price of the wasted energy and hefty equipment, electrical utilities usually charge extra, where there is a low power factor.

The new model AOZ7111 is ideally suited for power factor correction applications that operate in critical conduction mode (CRM)——such as switch mode power supplies (SMPS), LCD TVs, LED and ballast lighting, and AC-DC adapters.

The AOZ7111 combines an AC input voltage fault detection function with an internal closed-loop soft-start, to facilitate a well-managed current ramp-up. This feature prevents large inrush currents (or input surges) during system startup and reset operations. The secondary over-voltage protection (OVP) function also makes the system more robust and reliable. Additionally, the AOZ7111's zero-current detection feature eliminates the need for an auxiliary winding, reducing system cost.

"We are pleased with the customer and market feedback on our new power factor correction solution. Our PFC control IC along with our high-performance MOSFETs [metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors used for amplifying or switching electronic signals] have been optimized to bring extra safety features and functions while continuing to focus on improved BOM cost for our customers. The added system benefits to our customers, makes our first PFC product to the market a strong contender," said Wayne Eng, Director of Product Marketing at Sunnyvale, California-based AOS.

The AOZ7111 is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12 weeks. The unit price for 1,000 pieces is $0.49.
