Step up the Momentum - Switch to Green without Delay

Making the ‘green switch’ doesn’t really require you to do big things for the environment, and as another Earth Day passes by, individuals and businesses, small or big, can all contribute in their small ways and step up the momentum on going green.

There are certain things that all of us can do. One simple decision can drastically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the amount of paper that is in circulation, save water and prevent trees from being cut down. Collectively, all this helps the environment more than we think.

Payroll on a Budget, an Internet payroll processing services company that provides secure, paperless, online payroll solutions for small businesses with one to 10 employees, calculated the environmental impact of a small company with just 10 employees on a weekly payroll.

The results were staggering. It was found that about 12 reams of paper would be required annually to deliver checks and reports to the 10 employees, while the environmental cost to produce, process and dispose of this paper would require 2,080 gallons of water and result in the production of 48 pounds of greenhouse gases. Not to mention, the actual cost of the materials, cost of traveling and the harmful gases emitted during travelling to the bank to cash or deposit checks.

Office paper also goes through chemical and bleaching processes that only increase the environmental and economic impacts of its production. And, to make matters worse, much of the paper ends up in landfills.

"The environmental impact is significant, even with a 10 person operation. The magnitude is just staggering if you multiply these savings by the hundreds of thousands of small businesses in the United States," said Charles J. Read, CPA, president of Payroll on a Budget.

The message is loud and clear. A paperless, Internet-payroll service, like the one offered by Payroll on a Budget, can save business time and money and is environment-friendly. The company also suggests that businesses use its green payroll calculator to assess the impact that they were likely to have on the environment.

Just a small eco-gesture has a huge impact on the environment. Don’t delay going green.
