Epistar Corp has entered into a strategic partnership with Intermolecular Inc. The two organizations have signed a collaborative development program (CDP) and a royalty-bearing IP licensing contract, with an aim to augment the effectiveness and economical viability of Epistar's light emitting diode (LED) devices.

Engineers at Epistar and Intermolecular will use the High Productivity Combinatorial (HPC) technology platform from Intermolecular to speed up the development and manufacturing qualification of new materials and processes for sophisticated LED products.

In a statement, M. J. Jou, president of Epistar said, "After a rigorous review of Intermolecular's capabilities through an initial collaboration engagement, we have seen how their combinatorial approach to materials innovation and device integration can augment Epistar's leadership in LED technology. Collaboration with our industry partners has been critical to our world-leading R&D and manufacturing strategy. We are confident that leveraging Intermolecular's team and technology platform will further increase our competitive advantage."

With rising competition in the commercial LED market, there is an increasing requirement for novel technologies that not only enhance light output but also reduce costs. The HPC Platform will be leveraged by a multi-functional team of technologists from Epistar and Intermolecular to accelerate the research and development (R&D) process. The HPC Platform aims to increase the current pace of R&D by nearly ten times.

Sandeep Nijhawan, senior vice president and general manager of clean energy group at Intermolecular said, "We are very excited to partner with Epistar, a global leader in LED manufacturing. Entering into a strategic engagement with a top-tier LED company like Epistar validates the applicability and disruptive potential of the HPC technology platform for LEDs, a market that continues to have tremendous room for growth and technology innovation."

Intermolecular aims to enhance R&D competence in the semiconductor and clean energy industries. The organization has partnered with other enterprises by offering its HPC platform as an alternative to conventional solutions.
