Green Technology World Week in Review

While October is here and everything outside has begun to turn red, gold and brown, the best in technology today is green. Here’s a summation of the week’s happenings in green technology.

Biotech Company Monsanto has announced that it has purchased Climate Corporation for $1.1 billion. Part of the all-cash deal will be paid out over time as an employee retention plan. The Climate Corporation's expertise is data science. The company takes a wide range of data and turns it into valuable insights and advice for farmers. Climate Corporations data information can help farmers make smarter choices using fewer resources including decisions such as planting earlier or changing their irrigation schedules.

First Wind, a U.S.-based renewable energy company, has stated that it currently working on its first solar projects in the Massachusetts communities of Warren and Millbury. This project will give a major boost to the Massachusetts economy, with 3 MW (AC) project in Millbury and a 14 MW (AC) project at three sites in the town of Warren.

On the green IT front, Silicon Vision Technologies Ltd., a provider of high-performance, low-power radio frequency (RF) intellectual property (RFIP) and Mindtree Ltd., a global information technology solutions company, recently partnered to introduce a state-of-the-art, integrated RF-baseband-stack intellectual property (IP) solution for Bluetooth Low Energy (also known as Bluetooth Smart) technology.

Siemens (News - Alert) has built on the success of its SGT6-5000F gas turbine platform. The company has made a step change in NOx emissions while firing fuel oil. It demonstrated 25 ppm NOx emissions with water injection. For Siemens to provide the highest power output and lowest emissions on fuel oil, it invested in extensive testing of the SGT6-5000F combustion system. The company has reached a new benchmark in the industry, it said.

Committed to giving back to the community, the logistics giant, United Parcel Service (UPS), a package delivery and logistics company based in a Sandy Springs, Ga., had created its philanthropic arm, The UPS Foundation back in 1951. Since then, the foundation has been involved in various corporate social responsibility initiatives and charities. The recent years found the UPS Foundation focusing on the initiatives relating to environmental improvements.

Eco-Energy, an integrated biofuel company that markets for 18 ethanol plants across North America, has been focusing on adding value by vertically integrating the supply chain, from producer to consumer. It is the third-largest renewable energy marketer in the U.S. and currently handles more than 10 percent of the ethanol market with over three billion dollars in sales.

Since it’s the weekend, let’s talk pizza. If you want great beer, delicious pizza and a brew pub that has been motivated by its customers to go green, then the latest Pizza Port location at Carlsbad, Calif., should satisfy you. Installed on the roof of this new facility that promises great pizzas are 117kW of Kyocera (News - Alert) photovoltaic modules that will reduce carbon emissions and impact the environment positively.

eBay has announced that its newest data center has become the first in the world to use Bloom Energy Servers as its on-site power source, instead of drawing energy from the legacy electric grid. Built with patented solid oxide fuel cell technology, Bloom Energy Servers—nicknamed Bloom Boxes—represent a new class of power generators that produce clean, reliable, and affordable distributed power at a customer’s facility.
