Who's Hiring? Top Telecommuting and Flexible Job Fields

With job flexibility comes environmental benefits such as decreasing commuter traffic, which in turn cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions and wasted gas. But are the flexible jobs out there?

A recent job trend report compiled by FlexJobs shows the availability of flexible jobs in the top 25 career categories. In July, the Medical and Health career field leads the flexible job market with the highest percentage of open jobs across 25 fields. Openings in the Sales and Education fields are second and third respectively.The Art & Creative field had the biggest jump in overall volume, growing 36%. Education also grew by 32 percent.

It’s not all good news in all fields however. The top category with the biggest drop in job volume was Engineering, with a decrease of 43 percent.

“The depth and variety of flexible positions is fascinating,” Sara Sutton Fell, CEO of FlexJobs shared. “Tracking the trends has shed new light on what’s available, and the fact that flexible jobs better support and protect the environment make it all the more exciting.”

The job data is gathered by FlexJobs’ trained staff of researchers who scour hundreds of websites to gather this data, including industry blogs, employer websites, online job boards and feeds and many other sources, and it includes positions such as part-time, telecommuting and other flexible positions.Recent openings that are indicative of the variety have included positions such a remote neurosurgeon, a virtual golf coach, and a Registered Nurse that assesses health needs by phone.

With both small and large companies embracing virtual employment and flexible work arrangements, let’s hope that congested freeways and CO2 emissions may soon be a thing of the past.
