Rackspace Hosting Helps Businesses Get 'Greener'

Rackspace Hosting has announced it is stepping up its environmental duties by offering customers who visit their site a new business carbon calculator to help find out what their carbon footprint is and how to reduce it.

Together with NativeEnergy, a provider of third-party verified and certified renewable energy credits, the company is encouraging customers to take steps to reduce and mitigate their global warming impact.
“Many companies want to do more to reduce their potential negative impact on the planet,” says Tom Boucher, NativeEnergy president and CEO. “Rackspace is not only leading the way, the company is engaging its customers to support real and effective solutions that can help businesses reduce their environmental impacts and achieve corporate goals.”
As part of the company's Greenspace initiative, launched in 2007, the new calculator, available HERE lets businesses track and save data related to their carbon footprints and the offsets they have purchase to see their progress over time.
In addition, customers also have access to Greenspace Web resources which offer information on climate change, steps to reducing wasteful packaging and other related topics.
NativeEnergy allows businesses to offset their carbon footprints through the financial support or building of new renewable energy projects.
Rackspace as a company works to protect the environment by designing its data centers with power consumption in mind. The company also operates one of its facilities on renewable energy and makes use of energy efficient hardware and equipment so less electricity is consumed.
“Rackspace is committed to helping our customers meet objectives on all fronts. This new small business carbon calculator is a valuable addition to our suite of Green-focused offerings and will be a benefit for Rackspace and our customers as we continue our efforts to be more environmentally friendly,” said John Engates, CTO, Rackspace Hosting.
In an interview last year with TMCnet, Engates said the number one advantage to their Greenspace initiative is its ability to reduce overall power consumption and give back to more eco-friendly projects.
Engates also said that a green survey conducted by the company, uncovered that customers are willing to pay more or even trade some performance for lower carbon emissions in their data centers.
"Fortunately, advances in technology are eliminating the need for major sacrifices when it comes to these environmental concerns," Engates said.
