Intuit, Freecycle Extend Free Reuse Program to the Workplace

People around the world have one habit in common -- they buy more than what they actually need. And this results in trash that ultimately finds its way to landfills. This is as common for households as it is for offices. According to some estimates Americans generate about 254 million tons of trash annually. Recycling and reusing can be one of the ways to get rid of this enormous clutter.

Intuit (News - Alert) Inc. and green community leader Freecycle Network have come together to provide organizations a simple way in the form of Freecycle@Work, so that they are able to stop at least a part of that clutter from arriving at landfills and give it a reusable, second life.

Freecycle@Work is a free, online application that large and mid-size businesses can use.  It is nothing but a gifting and reuse forum that the organizations can set up for their employees.

The forum is built on the award-winning QuickBase online database platform and offers the employees an easy way for donating  unused work items, such as office furniture and computer screens for reusing or recycling.

The major advantage of the program is: it can create far reaching impact on the employees. Once developed awareness about the concept, employees will get motivation for joining similar communities at their town or city.

Any number of employees can use the application to give away or share reusable clutter lying around the home or office. There is no restriction on the types of things that can be donated-the program welcomes everything from fish tanks to filing cabinets.

People often under-estimate the value of the contributions made by a single donor, but single contributions can lead up to a huge movement. According to the Freecycle Network estimates, the amount of items gifted in the past year is the equivalent of over 10 times the height of Mt. Everest when stacked in garbage trucks, weighing more than 500 million pounds.

More than 7 million members in more than 100 countries have been the part of Freecycle Network's nonprofit gifting movement, which enabled individuals to gift items to others in their local community rather than throw them away.

The partnership with Intuit will help extend the movement reach workplaces and boost up its awareness building efforts.

"The partnership with Intuit expands our community-based program to the workplace and encourages employee communities to participate," Deron Beal, founder of Freecycle said. "QuickBase's unique ability to organize information and enable easier communication between work groups made Intuit the ideal partner to bring Freecycle to the workplace."

"Freecycle@Work uniquely combines technology and community to create an ideal way for companies to empower and encourage their employees to act socially responsible and participate in their corporate green efforts. The flexibility of QuickBase enables companies to grow their sustainability programs at their own pace and can even be used to provide corporate support for community-based nonprofits, such as soliciting clothing, canned goods or toy drives around the holidays,' Rupesh Shah, director of sustainability at Intuit, said.
