Laird Technologies Unveils New Series of Bluetooth Wireless Data Modules

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Embedded designers who are looking for a simple method to add advanced Bluetooth profiles into their solutions can now leverage Laird Technologies’ (News - Alert) new Bluetooth BTM 440/441/442/443 wireless data modules, which provide multiple advanced profiles on a single module.

As a designer and supplier of customized performance-critical components and systems for advanced electronics and wireless products, Laird Technologies is active in the wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) market, offering the widest range of high-performance wireless modules utilizing Bluetooth technology.

Laird Technologies’ latest offering, the BTM 440/441/442/443 Bluetooth enhanced data modules not only comply with the Bluetooth 2.1 standard but also meet the full FCC (News - Alert), CE and Bluetooth SIG approvals.

Available in either AT command or multipoint API modes by default, the Bluetooth enhanced data modules support up to seven simultaneously connected slave devices due to the enhanced Multipoint mode. This feature makes them an ideal embedded solution for more than just point-to-point Bluetooth connections.

According to Laird, the BTM440/441/442/443 series are simple to configure and set up. These data modules also provide multiple advanced profiles on a single module. One among the profiles is the Serial Port Profile (SPP), which imitates a serial cable to take place of RS-232 standard in cable replacement applications.

To enable users to use Human Interface Devices (HIDs) such as mouse, keyboards, and other peripherals over a wireless connection, Laird has also incorporated the HID profile in to the new modules.

The HID profile in the new wireless data modules can be used with custom HID descriptors – which the user defines in the module – thereby facilitating the user to stream data without sending the descriptor information.

Apart from HID profile, Laird has also incorporated another profile, Health Device Profile (HDP), including the IEEE (News - Alert) specialization for weigh scales into the modules. The HDP profile facilitates for a wireless connection between medical devices in order to transmit and download data.

“The BTM440/441/442/443 product series meets the demands of embedded designers who are looking for a simple method of adding advanced Bluetooth profiles into their solutions,” said Chris Downey, product manager of telematics and wireless M2M at Laird Technologies, in a statement. “They are also competitively priced with a quick time to market.”

According to Laird, its broad selection of M2M products provides solutions for the automotive, telematics, healthcare, EPOS, retail, finance, and security, as well as asset management markets.

Apart from providing wireless M2M product solutions such as radio modules, ZigBee radio modules, Bluetooth radio modules and WLAN radio modules, it also provides electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, thermal management products, specialty metal products, signal integrity components, and antenna solutions, as well as radio frequency (RF) modules and wireless remote controls and systems.

In recent news as reported by TMCnet, Laird named Farnell as its European distributor for its wireless and M2M products.
