AuthenTec Establishes Record with 50 Millionth Fingerprint Sensor Shipment

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

AuthenTec (News - Alert) has established a new record for the fingerprint sensor market with the shipment of its 50 millionth fingerprint sensor. AuthenTec provides fingerprint authentication sensors and solutions to the high-volume PC, wireless device and access control markets. More than 45 million sensors from AuthenTec are being used throughout the world.

According to Scott Moody, Chairman and CEO of AuthenTec, the shipment of the 50 millionth sensor underscores AuthenTec’s leadership position in providing advanced technologies and products to industry leading OEMs in the mobile and PC markets.

AuthenTec had established a previous industry benchmark of 25 million sensors in November 2007. It took less than two years for AuthenTec to double this mark to 50 million. The 50 millionth sensor of AuthenTec was shipped to Fujitsu (News - Alert) Limited for integration into its newest smartphone.

Hideyuki Saso, president of Fujitsu’s Ubiquitous Products Business Group, said that the AuthenTec products continue to bring multiple touch-powered features to millions of Fujitsu PCs, cell phones and mobile devices. Fujitsu is looking forward to the continued expansion of its co-development activities and its longstanding partnership with AuthenTec.

AuthenTec has the broadest product and IP portfolio in the silicon fingerprint sensor industry.

AuthenTec fingerprint sensors offer the Power of Touch, which adds security, convenience, navigation and personalization features at the touch of a finger.  Recently, the company expanded its offering to include new smart sensor hardware, software and client applications for consumer PCs, netbooks and smartphones. The new smart sensors from AuthenTec provide improved biometric performance, low-power consumption, multiple packaging and form factors including lighted LED options, and low bill of materials costs needed for easy integration into smartphones, notebook PCs and netbooks.

Moody also added that AuthenTec is more focused on shipping its next 50 million sensors as a solution provider rather than as a sensor provider. The recent introduction of AES1660 smart sensor and the new TrueSuite application has resulted in AuthenTec moving from a sensor supplier to a solution provider focused in identity management, personal security and multi-touch functionality.
