The 3D TV set market is likely to grow by almost 500 percent in 2011, according to an In-Stat (News - Alert) report.
The significant growth comes in the wake of 3D imaging receiving a lot of buzz. The number of 3D films being produced in Hollywood studios is growing. 3D has been popular in Hollywood in the previous century. Since 3D viewing, which adds depth to 2D image, is possible in the home, the growth of the 3D TV set segment is significant.
“Over the next few years, a greater percentage of large-screen TV sets will ship with the 3D feature,” said Michelle Abraham, research director at In-Stat.
“We expect 100 percent of all 40-inch and above DTV sets will eventually be 3D enabled. This will not only cause shipments of 3D TV sets to increase, but will also grow the number of households worldwide with 3D TV sets. 3D content providers need not worry that consumers will be unable to view their content,” Abraham added.
According to the recent In-Stat research, households with 3D TV sets will cross 300 million by 2015. In 2011, Europe will have the most 3D TV unit shipments at over 7 million. In 2015 Asia/Pacific will have the largest share of 3D TV unit shipments at 32 percent.
The research report called, “3D Enabled TV Sets on the Rise Worldwide,” offers an introduction to 3D technology. This apart, the report offers worldwide five-year 3D TV set unit shipment forecast by region as well as a forecast for the number of households in each region that will have a 3D TV set.
In-Stat covered companies such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Hisense, Mitsubishi (News - Alert), Skyworth, Sharp, and Vizio.
Recently research firm IHS iSuppli predicted that Global 3D television market will grow more than fivefold to account for 11 percent of flat-screen TV sales this year, as prices fall sharply and manufacturers add the function as an add-on feature.
