High Definition Digital: Week in Review

This week, many companies showed how turning to high definition digital technology is making its way into a variety of industries from the retail markets to the corporate world to the government realm.

Recently, high definition digital leader Emerson Network Power, the Avocent (News - Alert) division, published a white paper that explored that while high definition digital is finding a comfortable home among government agencies, a challenge often arises when classified information is involved. The white paper talks about how the use of high definition digital can be challenging within such an environment as it requires the complete duplication of systems, including the keyboard, video and mouse (KVM). When the Avocent KVM switches can be secure, however, this eliminates the impractical desktop congestion that can occur when users have to quickly and easily switch between classified and unclassified systems. A secure set of KVM devices eliminates the other set.

In other industry news, RollCall Business Conferencing Solutions, a national provider of virtual meetings, introduced its newest online collaboration service, RollCallTV, which delivers a rich high definition user interface and new features that work to improve live, interactive video for both viewers and broadcasters. The web streaming application is also on the forefront of another wave as it is available in the HTML5 technology with API service integration which allows users to more easily stream presentations and events.

“We launched this service to provide a next-generation environment for our client’s content, whether it is live mission-critical content delivery or on-demand multimedia streaming,” said Fred Lloyd, senior vice president and head of RollCall Conferencing, in a statement. “For a fraction of the cost of other streaming providers, our clients can stream presentations and events live to their audience, as if they were on television.”

Also this week, cable solutions provider RedMere announced that it is now offering ultra-thin, portable High Speed Micro-HDMI cables in Asia for portable devices such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and camcorders. The cable is suitable for use in home theatre, PCs, PC peripherals, satellite box and gaming high definition and 3D TV applications.

With the increased availability of high definition Web and video content for smartphones and tablets, major brands are quickly integrating increasing number of media capabilities such as high definition video and photo imaging and HD playback. Most of the high-end and mid-end digital camcorders and cameras today allow the user to point, shoot and share in full HD. RedMere’s latest product can address this burgeoning need.
