Watching the news on TV just got a whole lot cooler. This week, TVU Networks released VUPack Cloud, a cloud-based broadcasting platform that will allow professional newsgathering organizations to capture live coverage of news, interviews, and events in SD or HD quality, and transmit it to a Web audience or news station – all without costly infrastructure.

"Freelance reporters and news agencies are looking for better ways of bringing live broadcast content to TV stations or Web audiences with minimum infrastructure investment," said Paul Shen, CEO of TVU Networks. "TVUPack Cloud gives reporters a powerful tool to deliver the high-quality broadcast content that their audiences demand. TVUPack opens up a number of new content delivery opportunities for organizations, whether they want to broadcast live events direct-to-Web or arm reporters with portable newsgathering solutions for neighborhood or citizen journalism projects for covering local interest stories."

Some of the more advanced features of TVUPack Cloud are that live video can be captured, optimized and transmitted on the fly via multiple 3G/4G/WiFi (News - Alert) WiMax connections. The signal is received and stored in the cloud, and can then be sent to a Content Delivery Network (CDN) for direct-to-Web broadcasting, or news stations for live television broadcast, according to company officials.

Also this week, Panasonic (News - Alert), Samsung Electronis, Sony and X6D decided to team to support the “Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative,” an initiative that will help them develop innovative technology standards for consumer 3D active glasses. Together, the four companies will unveil active 3D glasses to the market.

“Today's announced collaboration underscores Samsung's (News - Alert) promise to meet consumer needs among the ever-changing advancements of home entertainment and consumer electronics technology,” said Jurack Chae, vice president, R&D Team, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics, in a statement. “To-date, active 3D technology has proven to be the most popular choice for consumers in the 3D TV market.”

In other industry news, locally owned telecommunications’ cooperative Matanuska Telephone has selected Comtrend’s (News - Alert) HD Video Extender for wireless distribution of HD IPTV video services within and throughout subscribers’ homes with wire-like quality.

Over one thousand MTA HD Video Extenders have already been deployed.

“We’re pleased to see MTA deploy the HD Video Extender so successfully, so quickly, to more than a thousand homes,” says John DiFrenna, Vice President Sales and Marketing for Comtrend North America, in a press release. “That’s quite a few families that can now move their TV’s to practically any room and on any wall that they want.”
