FCI and 3M Debut HD SAS Internal Cable Assemblies Featuring Twin Axial Cable SL8800 Series

SFF 8643 Mini Multilane Internal Cable Assemblies for FCI's SAS HD connections featuring 3M’s Twin (News - Alert) Axial Cable SL8800 Series have been jointly unveiled by FCI and 3M. FCI's SFF 8643 assemblies, which are capable of supporting SAS (News - Alert) 2.1 standard data rate of 6 Gbps, have been designed to be compatible with soon-to-be-unveiled SAS 3.0 specifications to enable delivery of 12 Gbps data rates. Cable assemblies can be deployed for system applications that need high density routing in tight spaces where restricted air flow constitutes a major challenge.

In a release, Jim David, global product manager, FCI, said that, “The twin axial cable from 3M (News - Alert) allows FCI to offer miniSAS HD internal cable assemblies that deliver excellent electrical performance to the defined SAS 2.1 and proposed SAS 3.0 industry standards. The cable's mechanical advantages also allow FCI the ability to offer cables that can be bent at a 90 degree angle during routing without any signal degradation. We are excited to work with 3M in using this cable as part of FCI’s complete miniSAS HD product portfolio.”

FCI will offer its internal miniSAS HD cables in 4x (4 channel) and 8x (8 channel) versions and will offer cables featuring standard sideband signaling. Additionally, the company will offer mating internal miniSAS HD board connectors and the complete range of miniSAS HD external board connector systems as well as external cable assemblies which have been designed to be SFF-8644 compliant.
