Service Providers Show Greater Interest in Monetizing OTT Video: CONNEXUS

CONNEXUS, a collaboration of companies including Spirent Communications (News - Alert), BroadHop, CommProve and Avvasi as founding members, announced the results of a poll that showed there is a growing interest among service providers, content providers and advertisers in monetizing OTT video traffic.

The poll surveyed 70 global telecom professionals on their plans for implementing monetization strategies for OTT video. Among them, 17 percent said that they have implemented application aware service plans such as YouTube (News - Alert) streaming plans while 30 percent said they are planning to deploy such plans in the next 12 months.

While analyzing service providers’ plan to deploy CDN technology, 13 percent of the survey respondents indicated they were either deploying or planning to deploy that in the coming year. Meanwhile 40 percent said they have already partnered or plan to partner with content providers to enhance OTT service delivery.

CONNEXUS ecosystem aims to enable service providers to establish their presence in the OTT value chain and foster relationship with content aggregators and advertisers. The collaboration brings together partners committed to an open architecture for OTT and multi-screen video service delivery.

CONNEXUS also released a report titled, ‘Fixing the Broken OTT Video Value Chain,’ that highlights the current challenges affecting the OTT video value chain. The report, which is part of a project commissioned by Yankee Group (News - Alert), also provides recommended solutions to the OTT video market.

“Service providers are recognizing that they must first build media delivery capabilities into their networks if they ever hope to monetize their OTT video traffic – either through subscribers or via media companies and advertisements,” said Brian Partridge, vice president of network research at Yankee Group, in a statement.

Meanwhile, in a recent report titled, ‘OTT Video: Content, Devices, Retail, and Pay-TV Collide’, In-stat revealed that the ownership of streaming media players has nearly doubled since the end of 2010.

“OTT video is continuing to grow, overcoming the barriers of low device connect rates and cumbersome user interfaces,” says Keith Nissen, research director at In-Stat.”
