Since the TV was first introduced, companies had been sticking to the 4:3 standard, until HDTVs came out and stretched that parameter to a 16:9 ratio. The wide aspect ratio allowed movies to show in a much more natural perspective. But that just wasn't enough, and Vizio saw this as an opportunity.
Now, super-wide HDTVs have begun to appear from Vizio, offering a 21:9 aspect ratio and allowing for a whole new high-definition experience.
Known as the CinemaWide HDTV, this 58-inch beast will start shipping in March, according to the report by USA Today. The TV will measure exactly 29 inches in height and an incredible 56.7 inches in width, making it one of the widest screens offered today. Its aspect ratio is very close to 1:2.35, which is the actual movie format shown in modern camera lens.
Before super-wide television sets, people had to enlist the help of an anamorphic lens projector, which is gruesomely expensive and not as versatile and colorful as a television. In the U.S., Vizio will be the first company to ship 21:9 HDTVs, and this might make a lot of home theater junkies happy, getting their fix with something much more tasteful.
Philips (News - Alert) already came up with a 21:9 TV, known as the Philips Cinema, but the product isn't available in the U.S. Since it’s a U.K. product, Vizio takes home the trophe of being the first to release such a TV in USA, home of the world's most loyal television audience.
Vizio'sCinemaWide HDTV isn't just a fancy-schmancy flat screen, though. The TV willinclue everything the company's known for, such asVizio Internet Apps, along with WiFi (News
- Alert) and Bluetooth connectivity. In addition, the television set will include, in its packaging, a Bluetooth remote control, a keyboard, and four pairs of 3D glasses, for passive 3D experiences. For now, the TV set's price will be just as heavy as the set itself: a whopping $3,500 at retail price. Although some might find it worth the price tag (News - Alert), many people might be turned off, particularly budget home theater enthusiasts. Still, Vizio'sCinemaWide HDTV will be much less expensive than an anamorphic projector.
