TMCnet's Hosted Exchange Week in Review: Acquisitions and 'Workcations'

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

It was another big week for hosted Exchange pioneer Intermedia (News - Alert). Shortly after it announced it would be acquired by private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners, Intermedia revealed it will acquire Zlago, a privately-held cloud services company.

As part of the deal, Zlago Founder and CEO Michael Gold will now serve as the president of Intermedia and report directly to Phil Koen, current Intermedia chairman and CEO and former CEO of Savvis. Said Koen, “The Zlago acquisition will not only extend the level of cloud expertise within Intermedia, but it will also prove to be a catalyst for strategic growth within the Intermedia cloud services portfolio. Intermedia gains Michael Gold’s management, cloud, and channel expertise – as well as important Zlago resources, such as deep relationships in the channel community. With Oak Hill’s resources behind Intermedia, we intend to build the leading provider of cloud services.”

If you’ve ever committed an e-mail or texting faux pas, you may now be able to turn the residual embarrassment into prizes. VaporStream is now inviting the public to submit their worst e-mail and texting blunder stories for a chance at several rewards, like a $100 gift card to (News - Alert), a year’s subscription to VaporStream, or a grand prize of an iPad 2 and the first annual “Blundies” trophy.

In other news, a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive, on behalf of Intermedia, says that most U.S. workers will not “unplug” from the office during their vacation this summer.

According to the stats, 71 percent of survey participants said it’s appropriate to contact them while on vacation. While 32 percent said e-mail is the best way to contact them during vacation, 20 percent said calling is preferred. The least appropriate is text messaging, with only 18 percent stating it as their preferred method.

While the stats aren’t so surprising, it’s still rather disappointing that a majority of people are unable to escape from their laptops and smartphones during a period of time that’s supposed to be relaxing. Next time you find yourself laying on the beach or hiking the trails, why not put away (or turn off) all electronic devices and be unreachable for awhile? This way, once you return to the office, you’ll be more than prepared and relaxed to take on the challenges ahead.
