Intermedia Marks 400,000 Exchange Users with Customer Earth Networks

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

Looks like advanced weather data provider Earth Networks is studying clouds in more than one way.

In a matter of only 10 months, Intermedia (News - Alert) has grown its user base from 300,000 to 400,000 premium hosted Exchange mailboxes – making the cloud services provider and its 400,000th customer –Earth Networks – both winners.

Not only has Intermedia retained its title as the world’s largest Microsoft Exchange hosting provider, but Earth Networks, owner of the popular WeatherBug (News - Alert) brand and the largest global weather, lightning and climate networks provider, has significantly boosted its ability to deliver users the most timely and accurate source of weather data across the globe.

By gathering neighborhood-level data from its own network of upwards of 8,000 professional weather stations with data from other renowned sources, like the National Weather Service, Earth Networks not only serves as a primary resource for weather information but also informs and alerts citizens, enterprises and governments around the world with advanced environmental intelligence for better decision-making and protection.

Earth Networks’ transition from an on-premises server to the cloud means the company is now delivering its Intermedia unified communications platform to 200 employees, which encompasses hosted Exchange 2010 for e-mail, hosted PBX (News - Alert) and conference bridges for voice capabilities, SharePoint for document management, hosted BlackBerry and ActiveSync for mobility, as well as fax via e-mail, resource mailboxes, and Intermedia’s secure log-in service UserPilot.

"As a company that serves a multitude of entities including business enterprises, consumers and government agencies, we need to communicate weather and climate information quickly and efficiently across our large user base," said Earth Networks vice president and chief information officer Lex Crosett, in a prepared statement. "By unifying and migrating our business communications to the cloud with Intermedia, we can better maintain the flexibility necessary to focus on our core information service business and our customers."

In addition to marking this customer milestone, Intermedia – which currently boasts 10,000-plus channel partners – has experienced an uptick of 40 percent through 3Q 2011 over the same 2010 period for its new mailbox sales, with 80 percent of created mailboxes deriving from new customers transitioning to the cloud from on-premise servers. Additionally, these new end-users arriving to Intermedia’s business cloud are also adding on a suite of cloud services. Meanwhile, existing customers are adding on average about 70 percent more Exchange mailboxes and services than they were in 2009.

"Intermedia is continuing to align ourselves closely with our core customer – the small and medium-sized business – by bringing new products to market that they, and our partners, are eager for," says Phil Koen, chairman and CEO, Intermedia. "Our customers recognize that with us they receive more than a mailbox -- they get an Office in the Cloud built with their needs in mind -- it is secure, always on and we're ready to support them 24/7. We're excited to count Earth Networks as one of those customers and look forward to a long relationship with them."
