BRIEF: York County major promoted to chief deputy

Jan 08, 2013 (Bangor Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ALFRED, Maine -- The York County Sheriff's Department has a new chief deputy.

William King, who has served as major since joining the department in 2010, has been promoted to chief deputy, Sheriff Maurice Ouellette announced in a news release Tuesday.

King succeeds the late Chief Deputy Mat Baker, who died last November.

Before coming to the York County Sheriff's Office, King served 26 years with the U.S. Department of Justice, starting his federal career at the Drug Enforcement Agency before being transferred to the U.S. Department of Justice, Officer of the Inspector General.

As major, King campaigned for more federal law enforcement resources to combat the Jamaican telemarketing scam.

Ouellette said a dozen applicants have applied for the open major's position from across the country.
