NXP Intros Next Generation UHF Smart Label ICs

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

NXP has announced the UCODE G2XM and UCODE G2XL, its next-generation smart label ICs. The new UCODE RFID chips features breakthrough performance over the entire UHF frequency range and offers reliable operation across very long read ranges and in dense reader environments.

Both UCODE G2XM and UCODE G2XL provide scalable EPC numbers up to 240 bit. The ICs offer unparalleled flexibility when using RFID in multiple applications requiring different EPC codes and storing additional application data. According to NXP, the UCODE G2XM provides 512-bit user memory, which they claims is the largest dedicated user memory on the market today.

Jan-Willem Reynaerts, general manager, RFID, NXP Semiconductors (News - Alert) believes their newest UCODE devices are best in class for passive smart tags and labels, incorporating advanced capabilities requested by their customers, and have been fully optimized at the NXP RFID Reference Design Center in Austria.

“The UCODE G2XM and UCODE G2XL demonstrate unsurpassed UHF performance in real-world scenarios for supply chain management and logistics. Our latest smart label ICs provide reliable operation on different materials, across long distances in environments where multiple tags and labels are read simultaneously,” said Reynaerts in a statement.

NXP points out that established tag and label manufacturers including LSIS, KSW Microtec, RF IDentics, RSI ID Technologies, Tagsys and UPM Raflatac have thoroughly tested the new G2X chips, with consistent positive feedback. Few companies are already actively working on RFID implementations with end users based on the new NXP UCODE range in applications such as footwear, recorded media, apparel, and the manufacturing and tracking of electronic goods through global supply chains and into retail locations.

The company’s new next-generation smart label ICs are specifically designed for ease of inlay assembly and high volume/yield assembly lines. Since the sensitivity of the ICs allows for broadband antenna design, it allows inlets to cover the complete UHF band from 840 to 960MHz. The UCODE G2XM and the UCODE G2XL are EPCglobal Class 1 Generation 2 (C1 G2) 1.2.0 compliant. The company offers these ICs as wafers, on straps and in surface-mount devices to its customers.

Headquartered in Europe, NXP creates semiconductors, system solutions and software that deliver better sensory experiences in mobile phones, personal media players, TVs, set-top boxes, identification applications, cars and a wide range of other electronic devices.
