Telecommunication service providers ClearTech and NeuStar (News - Alert) have jointly stated that they won a number portability contract from the Brazilian Association of Telecommunications Resources.
The team will now provide mediation services between carriers, operate the centralized database, and manage the various steps involved in both fixed and mobile phone number portability.
The contract, signed at a ceremony on Monday, September 24, calls for the implementation of number portability throughout Brazil for a five-year term running through 2013.
This number portability implementation will be the second-largest of its kind in the world after the United States of America.
Jeff Ganek, Chief Executive Officer of NeuStar, commented, “Although we estimate that our annual revenue from this project will be less than half a percent of our current annual revenue, we are excited about the opportunity to participate in providing number portability in Brazil and the potential for growth opportunities as the service gains traction.”
As of March 2007, Brazil had approximately 158 million telephone service subscribers (108 million mobile and 50 million fixed).
