Huawei Enables Hibernia Atlantic to Offer 40 Gbps Capacity Over Subsea Span

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

Hibernia Atlantic, a diverse TransAtlantic submarine transport cable provider, is now the first to offer native 40 Gbps capacity over a subsea span between Boston and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Hibernia Atlantic is using Huawei (News - Alert) Technologies’ latest products to allow this significant capacity upgrade over a subsea, international cable link. Built in 2000, this cable has a 192-channel, 10G system capacity using the innovative 40G technology. The Huawei solution upgraded the Hibernia Atlantic cable to a 192-channel, 40G system. This has increased the capacity from 1.9 Terabytes to 7.68 Terabytes.

Huawei completed this upgrade with 40G integrated solution. This internally developed solution includes its patented DRZ/ODB technologies that leverage widely available components to maximize reliability while also assuring a robust supply chain.

Anritsu (News - Alert) partnered with Huawei on this historic test and supplied the MP1591A network performance tester for the deployment test. The MP1595A 40G SDH/SONET analyzer provided the flexibility of service types and mappings needed to validate the subsea span.

“With Huawei’s trusted support and expertise, and Hibernia’s continual commitment to deploy the latest capacity upgrades in secure and diverse physical cable systems, North American and global investment banks, content providers, international PTTs and ISPs in need of high-bandwidth, now have a better network solution,” said Derek Bullock, vice president of Network Operations for Hibernia Atlantic in a statement.

Bullock explained that with increased capacity on a reliable network at wholesale prices, companies can now deploy streaming video and other next-generation applications and services over the Hibernia Atlantic network, with confidence and ease. Their expert sales team is already marketing this product and commercial contracts are slated to go live in the first quarter of 2008.

Wilf Norrlinger, vice president of Sales for Huawei said that the ability to offer Hibernia Atlantic’s customers 40 Gbps connectivity on a wet span is a dramatic advance in network efficiency, establishing an industry-leading benchmark while providing customers another diverse and secure route to communicate on the eastern seaboard of North America.

Norrlinger emphasizes that this new advancement is another example of Huawei Technologies and Hibernia Atlantic’s commitment to providing the highest levels of network performance and customer satisfaction to the market, in record-breaking time.
