Lucent and Verizon Complete IMS Interoperability Testing

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Lucent Technologies has participated in the MultiService Forum’s global multi-vendor interoperability IMS trial. The two-week event was hosted by five carriers: British Telecom, KT, NTT, Verizon (News - Alert) Communications and Vodafone. It tested interoperability among 26 vendors’ equipment in five different laboratories throughout the world, including one at the University of New Hampshire.

Lucent provided equipment for Verizon’s lab in Waltham, MA, where the company had also completed a separate IMS trial with Verizon. An extensive trial was conducted on Lucent’s IMS solution, which could aid Verizon in delivering a number of IP based multimedia blended services over a variety of access technologies.

Lucent contributed a range of TISPAN and 3GPP-compliant elements from its IMS solution for the testing, including the Lucent Session Manager, Lucent Service Broker, Lucent Unified Subscriber Data Server, Lucent SurePay Real-time Rating and Charging Engine, Lucent Feature Server, Lucent Network Gateway (News - Alert), Lucent Signaling Gateway and Lucent Network Controller.

The trial tested multi-vendor interoperability within the IMS service framework, and validated the MSF Release 3 Implementation supporting the industry’s TISPAN and 3GPP IMS standards. The MSF consists of service providers, system suppliers and test equipment vendors who are committed to developing and promoting open architectures.

“The MSF’s interoperability trial is another key milestone for the deployment of the IMS service delivery architecture that is already being implemented by Lucent customers globally,” said Roger Heinz, vice president, Lucent Technologies (News - Alert) Converged Core Solutions, in a statement.

“Verizon’s trial demonstrated the ability of our market-leading IMS solution to deliver both consumer and business Voice over IP. Our technology, coupled with the skills of our Lucent Worldwide Services organization, could allow Verizon to meet emerging market needs that go beyond voice,” said Tom Moore, vice president of sales for Lucent Technologies.
