TIA Applauds Enactment of New and Emerging Technologies 911 Improvement Act

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The Telecommunications Industry Association (News - Alert) (TIA), a organization focused on advocacy, standards development, business development and intelligence for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, has come out in support of  new industry legislation from the U.S. government.

U.S. President George Bush enacted a key communications modernization bill, the “New and Emerging Technologies 911 Improvement Act of 2008.”

"We thank President Bush for signing this critical legislation into law, which will improve both the capabilities and functionality of public safety communications systems, by giving Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers the tools necessary to relay accurate information to first responders in times of emergencies and national disasters," said TIA (News - Alert) President Grant Seiffert, in a Thursday statement.

Sponsored in Congress by Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), this legislation is considered to be a significant step toward making America’s IP-based services first-responder friendly.

"Not only does this new law facilitate the transition to competitive IP-based products and services," Seiffert said, "but it recognizes the need for public safety communications no matter what type of communications technology is being used. Its enactment allows a full transition to a 21st century emergency telecommunications infrastructure.”

The effective enactment of this new law provides that all citizens can be assured first response in the event of an emergency, no matter technology is being used to place or receive a 911 call. As more and more organizations are moving toward VoIP implementations, there was and is a significant need for this legislation.

The TIA represents the global information and communications technology industry through standards development, advocacy, business opportunities, market intelligence and world-wide environmental regulatory analysis.

Thousands of companies and individuals work with TIA to enhance the business environment for telecommunications, broadband, mobile wireless, information technology, networks, cable, satellite, unified communications, emergency communications and the greening of technology.

The organization’s Board of Directors includes senior-level executives from such companies as ACS, ADC, ADTRAN, Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), ANDA Networks, ArrayComm, AttivaCorp, Avaya, Bechtel Communications, Inc., Cam Communications, Cisco Systems, Corning Incorporated, Ericsson, Inc., Graybar, Harris Stratex, Henkels & McCoy, Intel Corporation, LGE, Microsoft, Motorola (News - Alert) and Nortel to name just a few.

Membership in the TIA allows companies to enhance their ability to prepare for the future of communications. The organization brings people and businesses together by helping the industry to overcome technical and political barriers to communications.
